I'm Back... A Look Back at 2021 and an Outlook for 2022

I'm Back... A Look Back at 2021 and an Outlook for 2022

As I look back on 2021, I’m pretty hopeful for 2022 to be a year of recovery and refresh… and not just for me, but also for you too. I’m not really sure what’s planned for my future but I guess I’ll just have to keep trying and doing things until I find another superfluous circumstance to carry me for the next while. In the meanwhile, I’ll keep a camera on hand, right next to my professional drone and a block of cheese.

I'm Back. It's Been A While: A Look Back on the Last 2 Years So Far (2020)

I'm Back. It's Been A While: A Look Back on the Last 2 Years So Far (2020)

I haven’t posted in a while. It’s been a long time. It was just a few days ago that the fireworks happening in all parts of the world as we all collectively rung in the new year of 2022… and with a new year comes new opportunities. As I sat down and looked at some of my old photos and old posts from a while ago, I thought to myself that it was finally time to start to come back again and turn back on the pilot light that was my photography passion. You see, COVID really put a damper on that.

Documentary Candid Family Session - Paul, Jenny and Caitlin

Documentary Candid Family Session - Paul, Jenny and Caitlin

This was a very relaxed session with the picking up of leaves, the running through the grass and the obtaining of ice cream. Jenny did not want posed and cheesy photos of her, Paul and her little one so she talked to me about what I offered. I told her about my documentary (candid) approach and she was game.

Documentary Candid Family Session - Eee, Zee and Cee - Part 2

Documentary Candid Family Session - Eee, Zee and Cee - Part 2

2 years ago, I documented Cee when he was just a fresh new baby and Eee was taking down schedules of poops. I recall Cee was only a week or so old and so everything was new for everyone.

(You can see the first session here)

So then it was really cool to be able to come back again a few years later and see how this little boy had grown up. What a difference a year or two makes.

Documentary Candid Family Session - Part 2 - Dana and Family

6 months after I documented Dana’s family, I was asked to come back again and take more photographs! This time around, it was getting close to Christmas so I made a point to capture some of the details while documenting the boys running around and having fun and while finding those split-second moments to click the shutter…

2019 Year In Review - A Lesson In Time Management

2019 Year In Review - A Lesson In Time Management

What an amazing 2019 it has been. At the same time I was learning how to be a Dad (my little one was 3 months old when 2019 started) I was learning how to juggle personal duties with photography work and everything in between. That’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy the work that I did (and I do hope for more in 2020) but 2019 really taught me the importance of time management. Having a kid is an amazing and rewarding experience but it definitely changes your life and your outlook on things… and poop. As such, I didn’t have time to blog this year and that allowed me to have a really good hard look back at the year was 2019 through this post.

Lonsdale Quay North Vancouver Family Session - Wendy and Family

Lonsdale Quay North Vancouver Family Session - Wendy and Family

Capturing life as it happens is such a joy to see. It’s pure smiles and true interaction. A lot of it happens spontaneously and moments go by so quick but people, like Wendy, hire me for these types of photos and they love them.

2018 Year End Review - My Documentary Photography Comes Home

2018 Year End Review - My Documentary Photography Comes Home

How do you even begin to encapsulate a year? It’s 365 days of living and being and breathing and it all goes by so fast. As a photographer, the photos I take are not only momentos of the little moments that went by but also memory place holders that let me look back and recall a time in my life: the smells, the sights and even the sounds.

Newborn Documentary Photosession - Zee, Eee and Cee

Yes, their actual names are not Zee, Eee or Cee but this is a special for a good friend :)

I've known Zee and Eee for a while and they've been great friends. When they asked me to take photos of their brand new baby Cee and they wanted it in a documentary approach, I was more than delighted to spend some time with them and take their photos. The day I arrived, Cee was about 2 weeks old so he was pretty new to the world at that time.

Documentary Family Session - Dana and Family

Documentary Family Session - Dana and Family

Being a documentary photographer means being a part of people's lives. I've found out over the years that cameras, film, technology and other things really have little to do with a photo... although, of course, you need these items to actually make a photograph. Yet, much of it is about connecting with your fellow human and relating on a personal level. Too many times I find myself hiding behind a camera to take photos only to realize that the best ones I take (at least to me) are ones where I've connected with people.
