Documenting Vancouver’s Chinatown
A Long Term Documentary Photo Project

In 2013, I started a photography project for myself that I thought would last a year and end in a book. Well... a book was created but I couldn't stop the project there; I had to keep going. It's 2020 now (as of writing) and I've become even more involved in the project than I ever thought I would be, having been able to meet people, make friends and become a part of the fabric of Chinatown itself. What started as a "photography practice project" has become a fundamental part of my documentary photography work.

To say that Chinatown Vancouver has changed would be an understatement. What was previously old shops have now become fancy stores and restaurants. Whole buildings have been replaced with condominiums and high-end shops and offices. Chinatown right now stands as a dichotomy of the old and the new. Where it will go from there... I really don't know.

The Beginning And The Journey

From 2013 to 2015, I roamed the streets of Chinatown as an outsider. I made a few friends along the way but this was the catalyst of my journey into Chinatown.
