Japan In Frames

The “Japan In Frames” Project will be an on-going project that will be a photography journal of the country and its culture and will culminate in a number of books.

I would say my love for Japan probably started when, as a young child, our family took in some exchange students. They were from this different country called Japan and introduced us to various aspects of their culture, including a few toys, their language and their mannerisms.

I grew up also watching anime and this has also continued into my adult years. Sushi eventually made it’s way to Vancouver and I remember being enamoured by it at the time, especially since it was “All You Can Eat” and boy… did we eat all we could.

I would eventually marry a woman of Japanese descent and thus even more grew into my interest for all things Japanese.

In 2014, I visited Japan a second time and took various photographs of all the aspects of the culture and art while still trying to enjoy all the flavours, the sounds and all the various personalities we met along the way.

From all this, you would think that I know a ton about Japanese culture but if anything I’ve found that I know almost next to nothing and am in a continual cycle of learning and re-learning things. Part of this learning process is in taking photographs of Japan; I would even say that the photographic process if part of how I experience Japan and how I remember aspects of it.

The goal for this project is to create a multiple set of books capturing the beauty of Japan, from its amazing urban centres to the beauty of the more remote regions and everything in between; to document the silent lifestyles as well as the super busy ones.
